Preparing Your Job Search Plan

example of career goal

A number of resumes may be already in your possession when you are preparing to apply for a job. Perhaps you are changing sectors and have made two separate resumes. You can use these resumes to guide your search. You can also use resumes created for your previous sector to help you create your current resume. It's also a good idea to update your resumes on a regular basis, particularly if you are changing sectors frequently.

Make a job search plan that is realistic and pertinent

Prior to starting your job hunt, create a detailed and realistic plan. First, create a list with five companies that interest you. Examine the company's financial position, culture, and overall financial health. Make a list of your skills, experience, and other relevant information. Once you have a complete list, it is possible to spend an hour going over it. Secondly, choose the type of company and role you would like to apply.

It is important to set realistic goals. It doesn't make sense to set unrealistic goals or aim for the impossible. Even if your college degree is not yet completed, you cannot expect to secure a position as CEO. If you are changing careers, you cannot expect to see an increase in your compensation. Be realistic when you are planning your job search. Also, be consistent in your approach. Remember that the goal of your job search is to find the right job. Not the first position you discover.

A timeline is important for job searches.

It is important to define a time frame when you start looking for a job. While you may assume that you'll start looking for a job in the fall, you should start planning your search one year ahead of time. You'll be able to collect references, write strong letters from advisors, and arrange letters of recommendation. You can start networking as soon as you are ready to look for a job.

Make a list of everything you need to do. To find a job, make a detailed list. Consider the input of others and split these tasks into daily/weekly tasks. Also, set deadlines. It will keep you on track and focused if you create deadlines. You can organize your time in five months, one year or more.
